In the Light
So here I stand with this guitar in my hand
What was it that I came to say?
There was something about some hope and some dreams and some fears
Some ideas for a better way
If I really feel like I trust you
Maybe we'll talk about the pain
Maybe you'll understand me
Maybe you won't walk away

You know I ain't no television
I'm watching you while you're watching me
I can tell when the music reaches you
Something changes and I can see
And it shines down on my soul, you know
And deep inside I feel
We're in this thing together
And we're touching something real

And if we're gonna do it
Let's do it right
Let's bring back the magic tonight
It'll all work out fine
If you just let it shine
I'm gonna hold you
I'm gonna hold you in the Light

It's so easy to get distracted
When I'm working day in and day out
I get lost in all the numbers
I forget what it's all about
But couldn't we cross the boundaries
Can't we conquer the fear
Shouldn't we love each other?
Isn't that why we're here?

And if we're gonna do it
Let's do it right
Let's bring back the magic tonight
It'll all work out fine
If you just let it shine
I'm gonna hold you
I'm gonna hold you in the Light

Days of Peanut Butter
In days of peanut butter. when my backyard was much bigger
And untold treasures lay beneath the park across the street
I dreamed of coming days when I'd walk right past the sidewalk
And no one could tell me what to eat

One day the world got smaller and I rode my bike to school
And because I was a dreamer I was taken for a fool
They told me I must win and that to win I must be tough
I never really cared for all that stuff, and

Follow your heart, that's what Mom would say
'Cause that's how you start making things go your way
You can do whatever you choose, just dream and work and pray
And believe those dreams will all be true one day

The Christmas I was fifteen I got a new guitar
And I dreamed that someday we would be the friends that we now are
And now I make my living just by singing songs for you
You see my life is just a dream come true

So this guitar and I will hit the road when springtime rolls around
We'll have no destination, we'll play from town to town
The world will be my sidewalk and I'll sing what truth I know
And I know Mom will worry when I go, but

Follow your heart, that's what Mom would say
'Cause that's how you start making things go your way
You can do whatever you choose, just dream and work and pray
And believe those dreams will all be true one day
I believe those dreams will all be true one day

An End to Winter
You can almost see the lifeblood running up inside that tree
Moving through the branches like a stream flows to the sea
And I long to see that water rising up inside of me
You know it's been a long and lonely winter

I guess I'm only frozen 'cause I stand here in the snow
You're calling from the doorway and you ask me not to go
So I stand here going nowhere it's the only place I know
The last place that I lived I can't remember

It takes the strength I have just to stand here straight and tall
And the numbness in my body that crept in after the Fall
Keeps me from the pain so I do not feel at all
And that is all that keeps this shell from breaking

So I will let you love me, but I won't let me love you
Though there's nothing from the mountains to the sea I'd rather do
You're warmer than a summer's dream but I can't believe it's true
I know that I would shatter at my waking

You can almost see the lifeblood running up inside that tree
Flowing through the branches like a river to the sea
And I think I feel a drop rolling down inside of me
You know there must be an end to winter
There must be an end to winter

Celebration
I feel the joy of life surround me
I feel the God of love smile down on me
This is a time for celebration
La la la la la

And the air is full of living things
And the ground beneath my feet
They pop up just to say hello
It is so nice to greet you on this
Lovely summer morning
When the stream runs high and loud
So welcome to my home my friend
You know it makes me awful proud

To see the joy of life surround you
And the God of love smile down on you
This is a time for celebration
La la la la la

Now I've been down so long I forgot what it's about
But it's time to open up my eyes
Start looking 'round and start looking out

And see the joy of life surround me
And the God of love smile down on me
This is a time for celebration
La la la la la

The River
Morning on the river
She rolls back her blanket and I roll back mine
And we rise together
Once again, like every morning that I've known
Since I made this place my home
She knows my secrets
She knows stories no one else will ever know
And I listen closely
And though you laugh and say that it could never be
Sometimes I swear she whispers back to me

And I roll with the river, and she rocks me in the night
And she whispers to wake me in the cool morning light
My blood runs in the river, in my veins her waters flow
And where she leads me I will go

My kayak around me
I've known her peace and her fury in its time
I roll in her rapids
She turns me under and I come back up again
But I know that she is stronger in the end
After the rainstorm
The river changes and she's not the one I know
The water runs faster
As if she's telling me to just stay home today
But I know I'll have to go out anyway

And I'm cutting through the water as the water cuts the shore
And she tells me to go home now, but I want a little more
And then suddenly I'm spinning and I can't get any air
And I realize I'm dying and she doesn't seem to care

And I roll with the river, and she rocks me in the night
And she whispers to wake me in the cool morning light
My blood runs in the river, in my veins her waters flow
And where she leads me I will go

Calm in the crisis
I'm surprised to find this peace within my soul
I know that it's time now
I stop the struggle and I let her take control
If I must die this is where I want to go
Suddenly daylight
My head is aching and I'm gasping for the air
I don't know what happened
When I stopped fighting she just turned me up again
And my tears run down the river with the rain

And I roll with the river, and she rocks me in the night
And she whispers to wake me in the cool morning light
My blood runs in the river, in my veins her waters flow
And where she leads me I will go

Just Don't Know Blues

It makes a lot of difference when you go to run a race
You gotta get a good start if you want to see first place
And if you're looking for a job and you go for an interview
You know they won't forget their first impression of you
So I'm standing on this stage here, shakin' in my shoes
I've got the just don't know which song to sing first tonight blues

I've got soft pretty sad songs guaranteed to make you weep
Songs to wake you up and songs to put you back to sleep
I've got songs about feeling low down, songs about feeling high
Songs that tell the truth and songs that outright lie
I've got a lot of choices but I don't know what to choose
I've got the just don't know which song to sing first tonight blues

I've got songs about love and songs about war
And songs you've probably never even heard before
Songs that last a minute and songs that last an hour
And songs you'll never hear 'cause I only sing 'em in the shower

I've had people treat me like a king and make me wear a crown a
And people pull me off the stage and run me out of town
But I guess I can relax now, I guess the deal is done
'Cause I just sang the first song and it was kind of fun

So when all else fails I've got one song I can use
The just don't know which song to sing first tonight blues
I've got so many choices I'm counting them in twos, but
I've got the downright uptight
Talk about stagefright
Out of mind out of sight
Losin' my appetite
Just don't know which song to sing first tonight blues

Whites of Their Eyes
We live in violent times when the reasons don't quite rhyme
We satch the game and tally up the score
But it's hard to count the cost, what's won and who is lost
When honesty is a casualty of war

And it's always been the plan of the ones who hold command
To make the other side seem less than real
So we shout about our pride and the deaths are justified
And we glorify the ones who do not feel

But I say don't fire 'til you see the whites of their eyes
Don't fire 'til you hear the truth through the lies
Don't fire 'til you know the love in the heart of a mother's son
Until then, please don't fire your gun

Firing missiles on command, we don't have to watch them land
Pushing buttons in a video game war
Watching television screens, we don't have to hear the screams
But the people are still dying like before

So the graveyards are all filled with the ones who have been killed
And the families hear the words that they had feared
And we scream that we have won, while a mother mourns her son
And the battlefield is flooded with her tears

And I say don't fire 'til you see the whites of their eyes
Don't fire 'til you hear the truth through the lies
Don't fire 'til you know the love in the heart of a mother's son
Until then, please don't fire your gun

The generals of all times have only fought to rule the minds
Of the people who will make the bullets fly
So the soldiers go and fight for what they believe is right
And the ones who give the orders seldom die

So we're left here with a choice, will we hide or raise a voice
Will we fight a war, or will we fight for peace
'Cause if there's one thing that I know, it's that the heads of state won't go
Without the soldiers all the wars will cease

So I say don't fire 'til you see the whites of their eyes
Don't fire 'til you hear the truth through the lies
Don't fire 'til you know the love in the heart of a mother's son Until then, please don't fire your gun

Homecoming
It's good to be back after so many years
Alll of the laughter and all of the tears
Come rushing to meet me as I open the door
But those days are no more
I guess it's been empty since I moved away
I haven't been back 'til I came here today
The memories were just too hard for a while
But now I just have to smile

Do you remember November the fire burning bright
We curled up beside it through the cold windy night
We felt so contented and warm
And we weathered the storm
Now the roof's leaking, the wind blows inside
Flames in the fireplace long since have died
The windows are broken, there's dust on the floor
It's not my home anymore

I don't want back my yesterdays
I know we're better off this way
But this is just a song to say
I thought of you today

The Ant
I sat there on the steps and watched the ant
He found a cookie crumb that I had dropped
Just a moment before
He looked so happy, though the work was so hard
Dragging that huge cookie crumb through the mat before the door
Those big green plastic things they were getting in his way
But he looked so happy
Taking it home, taking it home
Hey look fellas, look what I brought home
Taking it home, taking it home
Hey look fellas, look what I brought home

Box of Wood

I've been spending all my time with this guitar
She's been a friend when I've almost forgotten what friends are
There's something good between us, I don't know how to say it
But I don't know what I'd do if I could never play it

And I pour it in and she pours it out
And I'm working hard and we work it out
And I don't know how and I won't know when
But she always comes through in the end

I've never been to good with other folks
They laugh when I'm serious and cry at my jokes
I guess a man who pours his life into a box of wood
Is trying to find a way to say some things he never could

And I pour it in and she pours it out
And I'm working hard and we work it out
And I don't know how and I won't know when
But she always comes through in the end

I'm no master of her strings
My life and my songs are simple things
But music is magic, it's beyond you and me
It lifts us up and it sets us free

And I pour it in and she pours it out
And I'm working hard and we work it out
And I don't know how and I won't know when
But it looks like she's done it again

New Lullaby
Oh-hi, sing lullaby
Hi-oh, where will we go
Oh-hi, the stars in the sky
Will sing lullaby tonight

You are my baby and I love you so
But another day is coming so this one must go
Peter Pan is flying, but he's flying low
Just to sing lullaby tonight
So hush little baby, don't say a word
'Cause I'm gonna buy you a mockingbird
And if it won't sing in captivity
Then we'll open the cage and set that bird free, singing...

Oh-hi, sing lullaby
Hi-oh, where will we go
Oh-hi, the stars in the sky
Will sing lullaby tonight

So rock-a-bye baby on the treetop
Well the wind may be blowing and cradles will rock
But the bow it is strong, and the cradle won't fall
So sing lullaby tonight
And now I lay me down to sleep
And I pray the Lord my soul to keep
And if the Lord should come see me before I awake
Then we'll run up to heaven and eat chocolate cake, singing...

Oh-hi, sing lullaby
Hi-oh, where will we go
Oh-hi, the stars in the sky
Will sing lullaby tonight
