Moving Mountains
When I was child I'd find my uncle
Sitting in his old rocking chair
For hours and hours, to me seemed like days,
I'd see him just sitting there
If I asked him what he was doing
He'd smile at me and say
David, I'm watching that mountain
'cause it's going to move someday
David, I'm watching that mountain
'cause it's going to move someday

(Chorus)
Faith to move mountains, hope to keep them there
Love for the creatures that call her home,
And love for the trees and the air
My uncle kept that mountain from moving,
'cause the mountain knew he would see
He said David you know it's a hard job,
but I reckon it's up to me
The mountain doesn't want us people to know
that she dances late at night
But someday I'm going to see her
and I reckon my uncle was right
Someday I'm going to see her
and I reckon my uncle was right

(repeat chorus)

There's one thing about a mountain
you shouldn't move her if she don't want to go
But my uncle would cry to see her today
and the men trying to lay her low
This time we can't just watch her
it's a problem we can't ignore
If we don't fight for the mountain
then the mountain will dance no more
If we don't fight for the mountains
then the mountains will dance no more

(repeat chorus)

Hard Earned Smile
If faces tell stories, and I think they do
There have been some hard chapters in the story of you
There's some dark and some lonely in the lines 'round your eyes
A thousand nights' tears, promises and lies

So we sit at the diner and talk until dawn
Lay it all on the table 'til the coffee's all gone
All the hard people you've known and you've been
Wounded and healed and opened again

And you said it best when you played your guitar
"From where you come isn't what you are"
I can hear the song ringing out over the miles
And there's nothing so true as the hope in a hard earned smile

We all have our trials and our lessons to learn
If your dreams are on fire then your heart might get burned
But to choose to be strong and have courage to heal
Lends truth to your song and the hope that I feel

And you said it best when you played your guitar
"From where you come isn't what you are"
I can hear the song ringing out over the miles
And there's nothing so true as the hope in a hard earned smile

Grey Eagle
I've got some pictures
Just some old black and whites
Everything was so simple
Maybe I romanticize
But it still makes me smile
Looking back on those days
When black and white fade to grey

And the grey eagle flies
And I'm riding along
To the land of my father's father
I'm singing the song my gradmother used to sing
About a bushel and a peck
And a hug around the neck and I'm home

Now there's a sidewalk
Where the path used to be
Where we planted a sapling
I can climb in the tree
I find I stand taller
With my feet on the land
That my grandfather worked with his hands

And the grey eagle flies
And I'm riding along
To the land of my father's father
I'm singing the song my gradmother used to sing
About a bushel and a peck
And a hug around the neck and I'm home

Once in a while I like to stop by
And make sure that the place looks OK
Stand on the steps with a tear in my eye
And I'm wishing that I could just stay
So I'll take a few pictures
With my Dad's thirty-five
Of my grandparent's home
Where they lived most of their lives
And a few in the garden
Where their roses still grow
And I'm hoping that somehow they know

And the grey eagle flies
And I'm riding along
To the land of my father's father
I'm singing the song my gradmother used to sing
About a bushel and a peck
And a hug around the neck and I'm home

Audio: Grey Eagle
David says: my grandfather bought a mountain cottage in the little town of Montreat, NC in 1939. He paid $1700 for it, and it's still in the family. It's not insulated at all, and there's no heat but a woodstove that barely warms one room. It's a great summer cabin, though, and all the cousins and aunts and uncles claim a week in the summer. When my grandparents died (one around Christmas and one around Easter of the same year) I found myself writing this song about them. It turned out to be as much about that old house, though, and another where they lived in Maxton, NC. I now live about three miles from that cottage. This area was called Grey Eagle by the Cherokee before Europeans ever showed up, and that's how the song came to be called Grey Eagle.

Lemonade
Lemonade
A big cigar
I brought you flowers
I picked 'em from your yard
Tip my hat
Miss I'd be pleased
If you'd consent
To spend the day with me
I'll buy you some
Lemonade
A big cigar
We can promenade
We don't need no motorcar
Oh yes I'm all for liberation
Baby can't you tell
Yes I think if you could vote too
That'd be just swell
But why worry about tomorrow
When today's going so well
Won't you be my southern belle
I'll dress real nice
Stand up tall
You sashay by
And twirl your parasol
Look in that window
We're quite a pair
You look so lovely
And I'm so debonair
I'll follow you like
Mary's little lamb
You tell the ladies
You hooked yourself a man
And then when it's time to ask you
I'll pop the big surprise
I'll hold my hat and bend my knee
And look into your eyes
And sweetly ask if you would like
To matrimonicize
Won't you be my southern belle
Lazy days
On the front porch swing
Bring me my banjo
And I might even sing
I'm living good
With my buttercup
I don't deserve you
But baby while you're up
Would you bring me some
Lemonade
Oh Lemonade

David says: I rarely come up with the music to a song first and then the lyric, but this is one of the exceptions. I stumbled on the chord progression one afternoon and liked it, but had no idea what the song might be about. Listening to the chords I decided it had a decidedly 'old south' sound, so I started spitting out images that came to mind. Before I knew it, this twisted little song had emerged. When I'm trying to write I believe in following the muse where she goes. She hates to be pushed.

We Are Each Other's Angels
Well I hope I see you later
'Cause it's time for me to go
Someone just pulled over
Sure was good to know you
Go answer your calling
Go and fill somebody's cup
And if you see an angel falling
Won't you stop and help them up

'Cause we are each other's angels
And we meet when it is time
We keep each other going
And we show each other signs

Sometimes you will stumble
Sometimes you might fall down
Sometimes you will get lonely
With all these people around
You might shiver when the wind blows
And you might get blown away
You might even lose your colors
But don't you ever lose your faith

we are each other's angels
And we meet when it is time
We keep each other going
And we show each other signs

Thank you for the water
I thought I was gonna die out here in the desert
But you quenched my thirst
Let's break a little bread together
I've got a little manna
It was a gift
From somebody who was passing by
And offered me a lift
Now go answer your calling
Go and fill somebody's cup
And if you see an angel falling
Won't you stop and help them up

We are each other's angels
And we meet when it is time
We keep each other going
And we show each other signs

Katey Revisited
I don't know a single thing about her
I had to ask that boy for her name
But I don't know if I can live without her
I don't know if I'll ever be the same

Katey dancin', look at Katey dancin'
Katey dancin', look at Katey dancin' tonight
Katey dancin', look at Katey dancin'
Katey dancin', look at Katey dancin' tonight

I know just what all the boys are thinking
And I know that all the girls are getting mad
I know there'll be some stiff competition,
But they're gonna to be crying and that's just too bad 'cause

Katey dancin', look at Katey dancin'
Katey dancin', look at Katey dancin' tonight
Katey dancin', look at Katey dancin'
Katey dancin', look at Katey dancin' tonight

Here comes that slow song
Time for me to make my move
Everybody just stopping and starin'
Saying look at that boy, he's so smooth

Katey dancin', look at Katey dancin'
Katey dancin', look at Katey dancin' tonight
Katey dancin', look at Katey dancin'
Katey dancin', look at Katey dancin' tonight

New Lullaby
Oh-hi, sing lullaby
Hi-oh, where will we go
Oh-hi, the stars in the sky
Will sing lullaby tonight

You are my baby and I love you so
But another day is coming so this one must go
Peter Pan is flying, but he's flying low
Just to sing lullaby tonight
So hush little baby, don't say a word
'Cause I'm gonna buy you a mockingbird
And if it won't sing in captivity
Then we'll open the cage and set that bird free, singing...

Oh-hi, sing lullaby
Hi-oh, where will we go
Oh-hi, the stars in the sky
Will sing lullaby tonight

So rock-a-bye baby on the treetop
Well the wind may be blowing and cradles will rock
But the bow it is strong, and the cradle won't fall
So sing lullaby tonight
And now I lay me down to sleep
And I pray the Lord my soul to keep
And if the Lord should come see me before I awake
Then we'll run up to heaven and eat chocolate cake, singing...

Oh-hi, sing lullaby
Hi-oh, where will we go
Oh-hi, the stars in the sky
Will sing lullaby tonight

In the Light
So here I stand with this guitar in my hand
What was it that I came to say?
There was something about some hope and some dreams and some fear
Some ideas for a better way
If I really feel like I trust you
Maybe we'll talk about the pain
Maybe you'll understand me
Maybe you won't walk away

You know I ain't no television
I'm watching you while you're watching me
I can tell when the music reaches you
Something changes and I can see
And it shines down on my soul, you know
And deep inside I feel
We're in this thing together
And we're touching something real

And if we're gonna do it
Let's do it right
Let's bring back the magic tonight
It'll all work out fine
If you just let it shine
I'm gonna hold you
I'm gonna hold you in the Light

It's so easy to get distracted
When I'm working day in and day out
I get lost in all the numbers
I forget what it's all about
But couldn't we cross the boundaries
Can't we conquer the fear
Shouldn't we love each other?
Isn't that why we're here?

And if we're gonna do it
Let's do it right
Let's bring back the magic tonight
It'll all work out fine
If you just let it shine
I'm gonna hold you
I'm gonna hold you in the Light

A Song of Peace
This is my song oh God of all the nations
A song of peace for lands afar and mine
This is my home, the country where my heart is
Here are my hopes, my dreams, my holy shrine
But other hearts in other lands are beating
With hopes and dreams as true and high as mine

My country's skies are bluer than the ocean
And sunlight beams on clover leaf and pine
But other lands have sunlight too and clover
And skies are everywhere as blue as mine
This is my song oh God of all the nations
A song of peace for their land and for mine

Wish
Seagulls high in a clear blue sky
They're just floating on the breeze
Not even flapping their wings at all
Living a life of ease
And I'm sucking exhaust at a stoplight
While they're playing freeze tag in the air
Got my face up against the window
Man, I wish I could be up there

I wish I could do that
I wish I could do that
If I could do anything in the world
I wish I could do that

Tomcat lying on the hood of that car
He's just soaking up the sun
Looks like he's bored from too much contentment
Too tired from having fun
He ain't got no high blood pressure
He knows it'll be OK
He's letting his life take care of itself
I wish I could be that way

I wish I could do that
I wish I could do that
If I could do anything in the world
I wish I could do that

I'm hurryin' and worryin' just trying to catch that dime
Doing next to nothing and it's taking all my time
I can't stop for any roses, I can hardly even yield
For the seagulls and the tomcat and the lilies in the field

There's a horn honking through my daydream
I'm stopped at a bright green light
Convertible car cuts around on the left
And whips up the ramp to the right
I was thinking about how I don't have to fret
About where I'll get my food and clothes
I don't have to race like the rat in that car
But I sure would love one of those

I wish I could do that
I wish I could do that
If I could do anything in the world
I wish I could do that

Song For You
I've got to be going now, though I'd rather stay
You know it is hard to leave, but I must be on my way
But before I leave you, friend, there's something that I have to say

You mean the world to me and I'll never stop loving you
'Cause what you have given me I can never repay
And if we meet again somehow, I will love you then as now
'Cause you mean the world to me

And when life is getting me down, as sometimes it will do,
My heart will come back to these mountains
and I'll remember you
I'll remember the love that we shared
and the ways that we grew

You mean the world to me and I'll never stop loving you
'Cause what you have given me I can never repay
And if we meet again somehow, I will love you then as now
'Cause you mean the world to me

Though I've got to go away, I won't leave you behind
Memories of times that we shared together
I'll carry in my mind
Some times were happy, some times were hard,
But I'm glad all those memories are mine

You mean the world to me and I'll never stop loving you
'Cause what you have given me I can never repay
And if we meet again somehow, I will love you then as now
'Cause you mean the world to me

Audio: Song For You
David says: I wrote this song when I was fourteen. My parents were moving and I had to say goodbye to good friends in Sarasota, FL. I did some editing when I was twenty, after spending an incredible summer in the mountains of western NC working at a conference center there. That's when the line about mountains showed up; Florida exhibits a distinct lack of mountains. Anyway, at the goodbye party my friends threw in Florida I tried to sing the song for them, but I was too choked up, so they had to wait five years until Barefoot came out.
